The ‘Game’ of Life

When my son was 5 years old, his older siblings invited him to play the Game of Life board game. He is a gentle soul not prone to rash behavior and relished the idea of joining in this game. Looking on the scene from a nearby room, I watched his face grow in utter frustration. Suddenly he jumps up and takes a swift kick to the board sending it into pieces across the room, screaming at his siblings, “This is stupid!! I don’t know how to play!”

As a mother, my first reaction was to get mad at him for spoiling the game, but then not… How can you get angry at someone who wants to be part of the fun, but doesn’t know the objective of the game much less the rules? Looking back on that incident –15 years ago –I don’t remember my response to my son or the other kids, but I do remember the impact it had on me.

My son’s reaction of anger and frustration is symbolic of what’s happening in our culture in general. People are angry! Why? Because they don’t know who they are! If we don’t know who we are — our identity and dignity as human beings — then we won’t know where we’re going…and if we don’t know the goal of LIFE then how will we know what paths to take, what choices to make, or how to behave that will make us happy? The problems we face in society today are not necessarily religious issues, but Human issues.

The purpose of this blog is to explore and ‘enlighten’ the path to happiness. I’ll include links to other articles, other websites, my own experiences and observations that may enlighten others…or at least offer ideas to ponder.
